Amazingly "The Shack" still sells discrete components

That makes sense because there is hardly any electronic product that does not have at least one or two discrete resistors or capacitors. I have an amateur radio station and use these components it my radio station work.

David, true, true. But ham radio may be the last place people use soldering irons and components like this. I used to love to put together little circuits (you know the ones: FM transmitter! LED blinker! etc.) but even that seems to be out of vogue. Seeing this at Radio Shack is like seeing a store that sells phonograph needles. Hmm, come to think of it, I'll bet The Shack sells those, still, too.... hehe
