Michael Rowe on the Catholics' tax-exempt status

In light of this delightful story, Catholic School Boots Student With Gay Parents, my pal Michael Rowe left his feedback on Facebook. I couldn't agree more with what he said, and share his remarks here:
The tax exempt status of religious organizations is predicated upon them being apolitical and "spiritual," and not meddling in politics. Religious organizations are becoming increasingly political and manipulative, especially with regards to elections.

I'm frankly getting tired of hearing how the Catholic church--or any church-- doesn't "hate" gays and lesbians. In this case, since this is the one we're talking about, they advocate relentlessly against gay rights, not just for Catholics but for all gay people; they slander gay people daily, from the Vatican on down; they cover up abuse by priests as far as they can until the priests are caught, then blame "homosexuality" for the pedophilia. It almost doesn't matter whether the Church hates gay people or not, since their actions are so representative of hate that whatever's in their hearts is inconsequential.

There are many individual Catholics that I love, but this is not a religion that has my best interests, or the interests of any LGBT person anywhere. When it comes to their rights to marry, to have families, to grow up in a society where children aren't taught that one sexual orientation is superior to another, sadly time after time, LGBT people have had to watch their backs in a way that straight people simply can't conceive.

Incidentally, I think that a private organization (like a private school) can do whatever they want. But to offer that school (or the parent Catholic church, or any church that involves itself in politics) tax-exempt status? Total and utter bullshit.
