Sam asked me about my top 5 fitness supplements— I replied:

hmm, top 5 off the top of my head

1. clif builder bar - 100% organic, good fiber and incredible taste set this bar in a leage of its own. plus, cheap @ trader joe’s!

2. and 3. optimum whey - regular and casein, both in milk chocolate flavor - my go-to proteins; regular for right after the workout; slow-digesting casein for right before bed

4. normal old creatine, I use GNC but any brand is ok since it’s just an ingredient

5. normal old l-glutamine, also one where I use GNC but any brand should be ok

gmail + IMAP = a dream come true

I’m moving all my email to gmail (well, google apps for my domains, same difference) and accessing it via an IMAP connection instead of POP3… can not believe I didn’t do this sooner! but after watching biz partner Peter doing the same, I was a convert.

I love having the same mail server across all my devices (it’s like auto-sync, only much better, since there’s no syncing going on) and surprisingly, though I still fly in Outlook with its keyboard shortcuts, I find myself using gmail’s web interface a lot now to reply to messages. probably because of its conversation folding— the way it auto-groups messages into conversations is just brilliant.

but the biggest #1 win for me with gmail is the “archive” button. I have a million emails that I need to save because I refer back to them now, later, or some day… but I never had anyplace to put them (and let me tell you, dumping 3000+ emails into a folder in Outlook is a really, really bad idea, esp when your Outlook data file is already about 2 GB and growing). now, I click archive, the mail’s gone but I can retrieve it in a flash via the search box.

part of me is a little freaked out that “my life” (read: all my emails, going back years, personal and professional) now lives on Google’s servers, on a free service (which means they could yank it at any time, I suppose)… but truthfully, the productivity gains I’m getting from this move are squelching my worries.

this is the final promo that I recorded at KPCC a few months ago— it’s long and chatty and I think I talk too fast and sound funny. (in fact, listening to it again, I’m 99% sure they sped me up, which is kind of amazing.) all that said, it’s fun, and I love the music choice!

strolling the Brooklyn Bridge: can’t believe I’ve never walked the Brooklyn Bridge before! It’s just terrific; great exercise, lovely path, neat views… and as a bonus, I see why the Bridge scene in Cloverfield was so effective. :-)

Granville Island market: the Granville Island public market (Vancouver, B.C.); this photo doesn’t quite capture it but you get the idea… it was in a big open airy space, which was great, and there were TONS of cool booths. More market-y stuff than the L.A. Farmer’s Market that I’m used to. Granville Island itself is pretty touristy but I was surprised (and delighted) to find that this market seems to be for the locals.

just got back from the W. Hollywood Park (photo below)… watching some same-sex marriages. Amazing; just amazing. I remember when I helped start PlanetOut (the very first big web site for the gays) in 1994, before Will & Grace, before Boys Don’t Cry, before taking a same-sex date to your prom was just no big deal… in fact, before coming out was no big deal. It was a very different time, and only 14 years ago.

And now, we finally have marriage equality here in California, catching up with a few other states and progressive countries.

Can federal same-sex marriage in the U.S. be far behind?

Still hard to believe it’s happened today.
